Top makeup mistakes MUAs wish every bride would stop doing
In a quest to get the perfect bridal look, many brides tend to dramatically change their routine without giving too much thought – hair dyeing, skin scrubs, eyebrow plucking and so on. But little do they know, these actions can backfire and result in a disaster on their big day, especially if their skin is not used to such harsh treatments and their hair ends up damaged and frizzy.
Here are some top makeup mistakes that MUAs wish every bride would avoid:
Not properly prepping their skin before makeup application.
In the months leading up to their big day, brides should get their skin in top condition by regularly exfoliating and moisturising. Doing so last minute will not give their skin enough time to fully adjust to the change in routine. This can even lead to breakouts or dry patches on the wedding day.
As best practice, brides should consult with their MUA to determine the best skincare routine leading up to their wedding day. Some may have dry skin and require more moisturising, while others may need to incorporate products that help control oil production. MUAs can also recommend specific skincare products or treatments to address any specific concerns the bride may have so that during their wedding day, the makeup will go on smoothly and last longer.
Getting hair removal treatments too close to their wedding day.
I fully understand that every girl would probably want to look as fresh and hairless as possible on her wedding day. But the thing is, waxing, threading, or tweezing may cause redness or irritation to the skin, especially the sensitive areas on the face, which could make it difficult for makeup to sit properly on the face. You will need to consult with your MUA about the appropriate time for hair removal treatments so that your skin has enough time to heal before your big day.
Generally, hair treatments like Brazilian blowouts or colouring should be done at least two weeks before the wedding day so the hair and scalp have enough time to recover. These treatments can also potentially cause colour bleeds, scalp irritations, or even hair loss, so an ample amount of time is necessary to make sure the hair and scalp are in their best condition on the wedding day.
Not doing a trial makeup session.
This is an absolute no-no! Brides need to know what to expect on their wedding day, which is why they should schedule a trial makeup session with their MUA beforehand. A trial session will allow brides to discuss their expectations and preferences with their MUA, and in turn, the MUA can share their expertise and provide recommendations based on the bride’s features, skin tone, and wedding theme. Should any adjustments need to be made, the trial session is the perfect time to do so without any added pressure or stress.
Skipping out on touch-ups.
Depending on the location, weather, and activities planned for the wedding day, touch-ups may be necessary to keep the makeup looking fresh and flawless throughout the day. MUAs will often provide a touch-up kit for the bride, which includes essential touch-up products such as blotting papers, pressed powder and lipstick.
Have a trusted bridesmaid or family member in charge of the touch-up kit so that you can easily freshen up your makeup whenever needed. This is especially important for outdoor weddings or weddings in hot and humid climates, as makeup tends to melt faster in these conditions.
